About
Christopher Cowell

In tandem with my work as a freelance opera director, I have put my modern languages degree to use over the years in preparing translations of opera for performance in English.

In addition to new commissions, many versions that were originally made for my own productions have been subsequently used by other companies, from small student outfits right up to English National Opera and the Royal Opera House. Alongside these live performances, full-length stage-works and individual arias have also been recorded as part of the Chandos Records “Opera in English” series. Any new translation is prepared in close collaboration with director, conductor and singers to ensure that it is tailor-made for the individual needs of each production and artist. In order to get the best results, existing translations may be re-visited and adapted in the same way. Being passionate about the accessibility of opera in the language of the audience, I am always interested in discussing any requirements for new opera translations or for single arias that are not already on the website. All my work is done on a bespoke basis, no job too large or too small.
